Medicines, Medical Devices, and Medicinal Supplements

TikTok Shop prohibits the sale of certain medicines, medical devices, and other health products marketed as dietary supplements, wellness products, or research products. Certain over-the-counter (OTC) medication may be permitted subject to additional requirements.
Whether a product is classified as a drug, dietary supplement, cosmetic, or other consumer products under US law depends on its intended use, ingredients, claims, and function, not how the seller labels or categorizes it. TikTok Shop may classify a product based on its listing, images, packaging, labeling, instructions, and other marketing materials.
Sellers are responsible for ensuring that all expressed and implied claims, including those appearing in product titles, descriptions, images, videos, packaging, labeling, testimonials, and other marketing materials comply with this policy. TikTok Shop may review any such claims and take action on listings that violate applicable requirements.

Medicines and Drug Products

This category covers products intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in humans, or intended to affect the structure or function of the body through chemical action or metabolism. It includes both prescription (Rx) and OTC drugs, as well as products that meet the drug definition based on their claims even if marketed as supplements or cosmetics.

Prohibited Medicines and Drug Products:

  • Prescription drugs and products requiring authorization or supervision from a licensed healthcare provider.
  • Unapproved or unauthorized drug products, including foreign-market drugs not lawfully marketed for sale in the United States.
  • Expired, opened, damaged, relabeled, repackaged, dispensed, sample, or investigational drug products

TikTok Shop does not prohibit dietary supplements generally under this policy. However, the following products are prohibited regardless of whether they are marketed as dietary supplements, wellness products, or natural alternatives:

This includes, but is not limited to, anabolic steroids, peptide hormones, SARMs (Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators), and other agents used to enhance athletic performance or alter body composition beyond natural limits. This prohibition applies whether these substances are marketed as supplements, wellness products, or any other form to ensure a safe, responsible environment for all users.

Medical Devices

This category includes products used to diagnose, prevent, treat, or manage diseases or other medical conditions, or products intended to affect the structure or function of the body. Examples include medical instruments, equipment, machines, implants, and certain "in vitro" diagnostic products.
Medical devices generally work through physical or mechanical means rather than through chemical action or by being metabolized by the body.
Certain classes and types of medical devices are prohibited. See Medical Devices and Medical Supplies Requirements for more information.

Medical and Health Claims

Product claims may affect how a product is classified and whether it is permitted on TikTok Shop. A product may be treated as a drug or medical device when its listing claims or implies that it diagnoses, cures, mitigates, treats, or prevents a disease or medical condition, regardless of whether the seller describes it as a dietary supplement, cosmetic, wellness product, or consumer product.
Medical and health-related claims are regulated by the FDA and FTC. FDA generally regulates product classification and labeling, while FTC generally regulates advertising and requires health-related claims to be truthful, non-misleading, and adequately substantiated. Depending on how and where a claim appears, both agencies’ requirements may apply.
For more details, see FDA: Food and Dietary Supplements Claims | FDA: Drug Classification Guidance | FDA: Drug vs Cosmetic Resource | FTC: Claims Guidance.
Medical, disease, health, structure/function, and general-wellness claims must comply with the Content Policy. Products making prohibited or unauthorized claims may be removed or classified under the applicable drug, medical device, or other regulated-product policy.

Federal law states it is illegal to sell products labeled as "Native American-made" when the producer is not a member of a US Native American Tribe or a certified Native American artisan from a Tribe.

This includes applicable obligations under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022 (MoCRA) for facility registration, product listing, safety substantiation, and serious adverse-event reporting, subject to applicable exemptions.
Under U.S. law, a product's intended use, including claims made in its labeling, listing, and advertising materials, determines whether it is regulated as a cosmetic, a drug, or a medical device. Beauty and personal care products that are intended to diagnose, treat, mitigate, cure, or prevent disease, or to affect the structure or function of the body, are regulated as drugs or, where applicable, medical devices. This may include, but is not limited to:
    • Deducting points from your Account Health Rating (a platform metric that measures a seller's performance and policy compliance)
    • Removing product listings
    • Revoking your access to offer products for sale

Sellers should note that some products that are legally sold in their local area, state, or country may still be prohibited under TikTok Shop policies.
