How to Use Out-of-Stock Product Relinking Feature

Summary

What is the Out-of-Stock Product Relinking feature and how does it benefit TikTok Shop creators and sellers?

  • It allows creators and sellers to relink videos with identical or highly related in-stock products when the originally tagged product is out of stock, maintaining sales momentum and maximizing revenue from existing content.
  • Benefits include saving time by avoiding new video creation, leveraging viral video engagement, and receiving curated product recommendations to ensure content relevance and compliance.

How does the Out-of-Stock Product Relinking process work, including notifications and product selection?

  • When a tagged product is out of stock for over 48 hours, TikTok sends notifications with a curated list of 95% similar in-stock products; creators can manually select alternatives only from this recommended list via TikTok inbox or Creator Center app.
  • Notifications are delayed by 2 days to allow restocking (40% chance), sent up to 4 times over 2 weeks, and only apply to videos published within the last 6 months with recent engagement.

What compliance considerations and best practices should creators and sellers follow when relinking products?

  • Creators must ensure the new product aligns accurately with the video content to avoid violations, as there is a 4-5% risk of non-compliance despite TikTok’s high-precision recommendations.
  • Best practices include acting promptly on notifications, enabling the recommended product links toggle, verifying content-product fit, and tracking performance metrics to optimize strategy.

What happens if the original out-of-stock product is restocked, and how does TikTok handle multiple product anchors on a video?

  • If the original product is restocked, TikTok automatically reanchors it to the video and notifies the creator; both original and relinked products appear as anchors on the For You Page.
  • A maximum of 10 products can be anchored to a single video, allowing multiple product options for viewers without losing engagement or sales opportunities.

Are there any limitations or special considerations for creators in Target Collaborations or regarding product selection sources?

  • Creators in Target Collaborations receive recommendations for products from other sellers but should only link products from the same seller per their agreement to avoid conflicts.
  • Currently, creators and sellers cannot manually select products from their own shop or showcase; they must choose from TikTok’s recommended product list provided in notifications.

Introduction

The Out-of-Stock Product Relinking feature ensures your video content remains relevant, engaging, and monetized when tagged products become unavailable. With precision recommendations and manual product selection, this feature provides flexibility while maintaining content quality and compliance. Previously, creators and sellers had no choice but to wait for products to restock, risking lost momentum and missed revenue opportunities.

Feature Overview

How does it work

Stock Monitoring:
When a tagged product in your video goes out of stock, our system monitors its status for 48 hours to allow for potential restocking (there is about 40% chance of products restocking within this period). If the product remains unavailable after 2 days and TikTok finds products that are 95% similar to originally linked product, you will receive a notification suggesting suitable alternatives.
Accessing Relinking feature:
There are two entry points to relink the OOS videos. One, from the TikTok inbox, and two, from the creator center app (only for creators).
Entry point-1: TikTok inbox Notification
This content is only supported in a Feishu Docs
Entrypoint-2: The TikTok shop creator center app

Product Reanchoring by Manual Selection:
  • Notifications include a curated list of identical or highly similar in-stock products with 95% precision, minimizing the chance of non-compliance. As there is a 5% chance of risk of violations, creators are strongly recommended to apply their best judgement while selecting the products. Creators and sellers can manually select a recommended product to relink with their video. Product selection is currently limited to the recommended list and cannot be chosen directly from your shop or showcase.
  • Ensure that the Recommended product links toggle button is switched on to receive suggestions for product links you can to your previously posted videos.

  • On the product links screen you will see the video for which the originally tagged product ran out of stock. Tap on 'Review Products' for the recommended products. • Name the product according to how you want it to be displayed to the Users on their For You Page.

Content Alignment:
  • Creators and sellers must ensure that the newly anchored product accurately aligns with the video content to maintain compliance. While TikTok's recommended products match the original product in 95% of cases, there is a 5% chance of recommending a product that may lead to a violation. To prevent potential compliance issues, creators are strongly advised to use their judgment and tag a product that is both similar to the original and relevant to the video content.

Restocked Product

  • If the original product is restocked, it will automatically reanchor to the video, and you will receive a notification. Both the original and relinked products will appear as anchors for users on the For You Page (FYP). A maximum of 10 products can be anchored to a single video.

FAQs

  1. Will I receive out-of-stock notifications and recommendations for products from other sellers if I’m in a Target Collaboration?
    • Yes, TikTok sends recommendations regardless of collaboration type. However, creators in Target Collaborations should adhere to their agreement and avoid selecting products from other sellers. Linking a product from the same seller in TikTok's suggested list is acceptable.
  2. Why doesn’t TikTok automatically anchor videos to new products?
    • Automatically relinking products might reduce latency but involve complexities such as creator-seller relationships and video-specific mentions of price or sellers' brand. To address these challenges, TikTok is starting with a manual approach and will build an automated solution.
  3. Can creators or sellers anchor a video to a product from their showcase or shop when the original product goes out of stock?
    • Currently, product selection is only available through notifications. Creators and sellers cannot select products directly from their showcase or shop but can choose from the recommended options provided in the notification.
  4. What is the risk of a violation when anchoring a recommended product?
    • With 96% precision, there is only a 4% chance of recommending a product that could lead to a violation. TikTok ensures that recommended products are identical or highly similar to the original. Creators and sellers should verify that the newly anchored product aligns fully with the video content to avoid potential violations.
  5. How can I track performance when anchoring a product from a different seller due to out-of-stock scenarios?
    • Performance metrics remain available in the Creator Center (for creators) and Seller Center (for sellers). Metrics can be tracked and summarized by product and video content. Use custom date ranges to evaluate performance shifts between products.
  6. Why didn’t I receive product recommendation notifications after my video’s product went out of stock?
    • Notifications are delayed for 2 days to allow for potential stock replenishment, as there’s a 40% likelihood of items restocking within this time. If no restock occurs within 2 days and a suitable alternative product exists, you will receive a notification.
    • Note: Notifications are not sent for videos older than 6 months, even if the product is out of stock.
  7. What if I miss the initial notification about a product going out of stock?
    • TikTok sends up to 4 notifications: 2 per week for a maximum of 2 weeks if no action is taken.
