What is Countdown Bidding on TikTok Shop and why should sellers use it?

  • Countdown Bidding (LIVE Auctions) creates an interactive, real-time shopping experience that accelerates buyer decisions, boosts engagement through live interaction, and maximizes conversions via social proof and competition.
  • It is available to sellers with SPS ≥ 2.5 or null and can be used on both PC LIVE Manager and the app.

How can sellers set up and manage auction products for Countdown Bidding?

  • Sellers can add auction products via Temporary Listing (quick, temporary, no inventory sync), Seller Center (permanent auction products, not searchable in shop), Bulk Upload, or by selecting specific SKUs/variants.
  • Temporary Listings last only during the LIVE session and require re-creation for each event; Seller Center listings take longer to approve but can be reused indefinitely.

What features and best practices should sellers know to optimize their LIVE Auctions?

  • Pin auction products on screen during LIVE to maintain viewer awareness; use countdown timers and enable combined shipping for multiple purchases (except international shipping).
  • Promote auctions ahead of time on social platforms, disclose auction mechanics transparently, maintain fairness, and avoid last-minute product creation to ensure smooth auctions.

What is the Video Receipt feature and how does it benefit sellers and buyers?

  • Video Receipt is a timestamped clip from the LIVE auction linked to each order, serving as verifiable proof of sale to prevent disputes.
  • Available to both sellers and buyers for up to 30 days after the order reaches "Ready to Ship" status and before "Completed" status; it is viewable in the Manage Order tab (sellers) and Order detail page (buyers).

What is the Surprise Set feature and what should sellers consider when using it?

  • Surprise Set allows sellers to auction a prize pool of multiple products with random wins, enhancing engagement through mystery and anticipation, but only one Surprise Set can be active at a time.
  • Sellers must disclose minimum prize values and remind buyers to monitor real-time win rates to manage expectations and reduce negative feedback; max bid per item is $5000, max 500 units per item.

Adding auction products to your LIVE on PC

Add auction products via Temporary Listing

Temporary listing is a quick and easy way to add a product to your LIVE. Moderation typically takes less than 2 minutes. However, as the name suggests, this listing is temporary and will not sync to your TikTok Shop store nor Shopify. Once the LIVE session is over, this listing is removed altogether. If you're running another LIVE in the future for the same product, you will have to recreate the temporary listing again.
Step 1. In LIVE console, click on Auction, and then click on Create temporary auction listing.
image
Step 2. Fill out the temporary listing product form. Put in a product description name and select the appropriate category.⚠️ Important: Avoid using words associated with "Bid" or "Auction" when entering Product name, or the Temporary listing will not pass review.Enter a starting bid. We recommend starting low (i.e. $1 or $5), though it's not a requirement. Select the quantity you have. Fill in the package information for shipping.
image
Step 3. Your newly created temporary listing will show up under Auction. You will also see a notification that tells you it's under review. Once the review is completed, the notification will disappear. Click on the little pencil icon to edit the temporary listing.Note that once you create a temporary listing, it automatically appears as an auction item with dynamic quantity tracking. Each individual unit displays with a sequential number that updates in real-time as items sell.
image
image
Step 4. Here you can edit the temporary listing. Note that the information populated here was set up your completion of step 2. Select how long you want the auction to go for, with a maximum of 2 minutes. Extend Auction allows the clock to go back to a preset time if a bid comes in the last second. Turn Sudden death on if you don't want the clock to reset to the preset time.Click Submit.
image
Step 5. Continue to add auction products to your LIVE until you are finished.
Step 6. Go LIVE!

Add auction products via Seller Center

Toggling it on will give you fields such as Starting bid price (a minimum of $1 is required) to fill in. Once you have finished filling out the information, hit Submit for review.Note: adding auction product this way takes longer for review; however, once approved, you can add this product to your LIVE session indefinitely, unlike temporary listing which disappears after each LIVE session. Also note that an Auction product is not searchable in your Shop. This product is designed only to be seen and used during a LIVE session.
image.png
Step 2a. You can also find any existing product(s) in your shop and turn them into an Auction product by toggling it on. Keep in mind the product is no longer searchable once you toggle Auction product on. • Pre-Order products
  • Made to Order products
  • Back Order products
Step 3. Log into LIVE Manager. In LIVE console, click on Auction, and then click on Add from auction list.

Creating a Surprise Set

Surprise Sets let you create exciting mystery auctions where bidders compete for entry into a curated prize pool rather than specific items.
How It Works: Set up a prize pool containing multiple products of varying values - for example, a Pokemon Surprise Set might include everything from standard Booster Packs to high-value Super Premium Collections (SPCs). Winners receive a randomly selected item from your defined prize pool, creating anticipation and engagement that keeps bidders coming back.
Step 1. There are two entrances to create a Surprise Set.Click on Add surprise set under Surprise set in LIVE Console.Or from the Auction tab, click on surprise set.
image
image
Step 2. In the set up window, configure the name, starting bid, and add the products into your set.
image
Step 3. When adding products, enter quantities available and shipping information.Or Import from Excel/CSV: Sellers can download a predefined template, fill in up to 500 product variations (including mandatory fields like Product Name, Quantity, Weight, and Dimensions), and upload it. Once uploaded, the system automatically fills in the product details on the screen, allowing sellers to review and edit them before finalizing.
⚠️ Please note, you are only able to add 500 units per item. The maximum bid for each Surprise set item is $5000.
image
Step 4. Once you add the surprise set, you are ready to go!
image

Surprise Set User Experience

During the Auction: Your live Surprise Set displays with quantity tracking (just like Temporary Listings), so bidders can see how many prizes remain in the pool.
The Big Reveal: When someone wins, the excitement really begins! A spinning prize wheel appears showing all available prizes, then dramatically stops to reveal their specific win. Other remaining prizes stay visible in the background, building anticipation for future bidders.
⚠️Important reminder for Surprise Set:To reduce negative feedback stemming from unmet shopper expectations during Surprise Set draws, it is crucial that sellers/streamers implement the following best practices:
  1. Prompt buyers to monitor real-time win rates: sellers/streamers should continuously remind shoppers to check the probability changes before and during the Surprise Set.
  • How-to: Guide interested livestream viewers to click the Surprise Set Product Detail Page to see how the win rates adjust after every draw.
  1. Disclose the lowest prize value: sellers/streamers are recommended to proactively disclose the minimum value of the items in the prize pool to set accurate buyer expectations.
The screenshot below shows where sellers/streamers should guide their audience to view the real-time win rates:

Overall Auction Best Practices

Before Auction

Pre-Auction Pre-heating is crucial for maximizing auction performance as it drives awareness and builds anticipation before the livestream begins. Early promotional posts across social platforms help increase engagement by raising awareness and building excitement.

Do's

Promote Livestreams Ahead of timeThe most common pre-heating platforms for Livestream/Auction promotion include TikTok videos, Discord Community Updates, Instagram Stories, and Email/CRM channels.
Promote Specific Products Ahead of timePromoting specific products and exclusive discounts draws more users in and creates transparency in the product assortment before a livestream. Being specific about products/rewards can be the reason why certain viewers join your stream and consequently make a purchase!

Don'ts

Don't Create Auction Products Last MinuteAvoid creating auction products immediately before your livestream, as all newly created auction items must still go through the standard product review and approval process. Build buffer time into your preparation schedule to ensure products are approved and ready before going live, preventing delays or cancellations that could disrupt your auction flow.

During Auction

Do's

Promote a neutral and unbiased auction environmentMaintain fairness and transparency throughout all auctions by treating every bidder equally, clearly stating all terms and conditions upfront, and avoiding any actions that could favor specific participants. This builds trust with your community and ensures a legitimate auction experience that encourages repeat participation and positive word-of-mouth promotion.
Provide transparency in the auction processClearly communicate all auction mechanics and winner selection methods to participants before and during the livestream. This openness builds credibility with your audience and reduces disputes while ensuring bidders fully understand how the auction operates and what to expect throughout the process.
Please make sure you are familiar with the following policies:
  1. External One-Pager — Guide for Offering Surprise Sets.pdf
  2. Collectibles Policy
  3. Gambling Policy
  4. Mystery Boxes and Similar Products Policy
Pin Product CardOne of the most important actions during an Auction is to pin the Product Card continuously on screen, so viewers immediately know what's being auctioned when they join the livestream. Without a persistent product display, new users entering mid-auction often assume nothing is happening and leave, resulting in lost potential GMV and reduced engagement.

Don'ts

Don't offer or solicit bids
Maintain proper auction integrity by not suggesting or negotiating prices outside the formal bidding process, as this can artificially suppress final sale values. Ensure all pricing comes through legitimate competitive bidding rather than pre-arranged offers or discussions that could negatively impact the true market value of your products.

For each auction you only need to show the auction number on the product (for example: “Auction #5”). The system will continue numbering automatically across sessions. If you start an auction (e.g., #5) but no one places a bid, the next time you run that auction it will still be #5. If someone wins #5 (regardless of whether payment is successful), the next auction you run will be #6.Examples Below
  • First unit: Displays as "#1 [Product Name]"
  • Tenth unit: Displays as "#10 [Product Name]"
This numbering system helps bidders easily identify which specific unit they're bidding on while providing clear visibility into how many items have already sold from the temporary listing.imageimage
