Surprise-Based Product Sets Policy

Key Points:
  • Surprise-based product sets are only permitted if they are manufacturer-sealed, priced at $100 or less, and do not involve any monetary gain or loss based on the item’s value.
  • Listings must clearly show examples of possible items, quantities, categories, and odds of receiving specific products to ensure transparency for customers.
This policy outlines the requirements you must meet to sell Surprise-Based Product Sets on our platform.

Surprise-Based Product Sets

Surprise-based products are items where part of the appeal is the mystery of what the customer will receive. These products are sealed and contain a mix of items not fully revealed until opened.
TikTok Shop only allows invited sellers to offer surprise-based product sets, and only certain types of surprise-based products are permitted. We also have strict requirements around how surprise-based products can be promoted and sold.
Examples of permitted surprise-based products include:
  • Bundles
  • Advent calendars
  • Mystery boxes
For trading cards and memorabilia breaks, refer to our Collectibles Policy.

Requirements to Sell Surprise-Based Products

If you are listing surprise-based products, ensure your items meet the following conditions:
  • The product must be manufacturer-sealed in its original packaging, with no modifications or repackaging by the seller, brand, or creator.
  • The product price must be $100 or less.
  • The product must not include any element of monetary gain or loss based on the value of the items received.
When creating a listing for a surprise-based product, you must include the following information:
  • Images showing examples of the types of products customers may receive
  • The quantity, category, and variation of products customers may receive
  • The odds or probability of receiving any particular product
  • The estimated value of the included products (any differences in value should be minimal)
In addition, you must follow the Gambling Policy when promoting surprise-based products and ensure they are not engaging in any prohibited gambling, gamification, auction, or break activities.

Enforcement Actions and Appeals

We regularly review your shop’s compliance with this policy and may take enforcement action if any violations are identified. This may include rejecting your category qualification application, assigning violation points, or removing product listings. For more information on enforcement actions, refer to our Seller Enforcement Policy.
If you'd like to appeal an enforcement action, visit the Appeals section of our Seller Enforcement Policy for guidance on how to proceed.

Best Practices

In addition to meeting the required conditions, you can improve clarity and customer trust by following these best practices:
Ensure your listing title matches what you're offering (e.g., “Mystery Box – Beauty & Personal Care” or “Mystery Box – Toys & Hobbies”).
Present information in a clear and easy-to-read format so customers understand what they may receive. Use bullet points or numbered lists where helpful.
Use high-quality images to showcase all possible product options. If applicable, group similar items (e.g., color variations) together visually.
  • Use a clear and accurate product name and category
  • Organize listing details for transparency
  • Include a wide variety of product images
  • Price surprise-based products at $100 or less
Keep product pricing within this limit to align with platform guidelines and customer expectations.
For example, if your mystery box includes children's products or items with medical claims (restricted products), clearly state that relevant safety or compliance documentation is available. Refer to the Restricted Products Policy for detailed information on the qualifications required for specific product categories.
Phrases like “worth way more than what you pay!” can create unrealistic expectations and lead to disputes.
  • Disclose if any included items require additional qualifications
  • Avoid exaggeration or vague claims
